Mainstream, SPED or Both? Understanding School Options for Children With Additional Needs in Singapore

As a child with developmental needs approaches school age, one decision tends to weigh on parents more than any other: “Where should my child go to school?” In Singapore, the choice is not always simply mainstream versus special education — and understanding the options helps you make a decision that fits your child. We've also written more broadly about choosing the right school, which pairs well with this post.

Mainstream Schools

Many children with additional needs attend mainstream primary schools. Schools have Special Educational Needs Officers and Allied Educators who provide in-school support, and children can succeed in a mainstream setting when their needs can be met within that environment. For some families, mainstream schooling offers the benefit of learning alongside typically developing peers and the social modelling that comes with it.

The key question is not whether a child can manage mainstream, but whether they can do so while genuinely learning and participating, rather than simply coping.

Special Education (SPED) Schools

SPED schools are designed for children who need more intensive, specialised support than a mainstream classroom can provide. They offer smaller class sizes, specialist teachers, therapy support and curricula tailored to a range of developmental profiles. For some children, this environment is what allows them to thrive rather than struggle. Choosing SPED is not a lesser path — it is a different one, built around a child's specific needs.

It Isn't Always One or the Other

The decision is rarely black and white. A child's needs can change over time, and the “right” setting at five may not be the right setting at eight. Some children begin in one environment and transition to another as they develop. The goal is the best fit now, with a willingness to revisit the decision as your child grows.

How Support Outside School Can Help

Whichever setting you choose, the right preparation makes a significant difference. School readiness work helps a child build the foundational skills that underpin success in any classroom — following instructions, attending, regulating emotions and managing transitions. For children in mainstream settings, school shadowing can provide individualised support during the school day to help them access learning and integrate with peers. These supports can be the difference between a child who copes and a child who flourishes.

Making the Decision With Confidence

There is no universally “right” answer, only the right answer for your child. The clearer your understanding of your child's strengths and needs, the more confident your decision will be.

At ABA Labs, we help families prepare children for school and support them once they're there. If you're weighing up your options, book a consultation and we'll help you think it through.
