Developmental assessments / screening
Developmental assessments help identify a child’s strengths, developmental needs, and areas that may require additional support. For children who may be experiencing developmental delays or learning challenges, early assessment plays an important role in understanding how they learn, communicate, and interact with their environment.
At ABA LABS, our developmental assessments provide a structured evaluation of key areas of child development, including communication, learning abilities, social interaction, behaviour, and daily living skills. These assessments help parents gain a clearer understanding of their child’s developmental profile and provide valuable insights that guide individualized intervention planning.
Assessment results allow our team to develop targeted recommendations that support the child’s development at home, in therapy sessions, and in school environments.

Developmental Screening
Developmental screening assessments help identify early signs of developmental delays across areas such as communication, motor development, problem-solving, and social-emotional skills. These screenings provide an overview of a child’s developmental progress and help determine whether further assessment or early intervention support may be beneficial.
Assessment Tools:
- ABA LABS Developmental Screening Framework
- Mullen Scale of Early Learning (MSEL)
- Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning | Fourth Edition (DIAL-4)
In addition to standardized developmental assessments, our therapists also use ABA-based skill assessments to better understand a child’s learning profile and developmental abilities. These assessments evaluate communication, social interaction, play skills, learning readiness, and independence. The results help guide individualized therapy programs and targeted skill development within early intervention.
ABA skill-based assessments we use include
- Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP)
- Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised (ABLLS-R)

Attention, ADHD & Executive Function Screening
Some children may experience challenges with attention, impulsivity, activity levels, or difficulties managing tasks and behaviour in structured environments such as school. Attention and ADHD screening tools help identify patterns related to focus, impulse control, behavioural regulation, and executive functioning skills.
Executive functioning refers to the mental skills that help children plan, organise, manage time, regulate impulses, and complete tasks effectively. Difficulties in these areas may affect a child’s ability to follow instructions, sustain attention, complete schoolwork, or manage transitions between activities.
Through attention and behavioural screening assessments, we gather insights into how a child manages focus, self-regulation, and task completion across home and school environments. These findings help guide intervention planning and may support referrals for further clinical evaluation when necessary.
Screening tools that may be used include
- Peg Dawson Executive Skills Questionnaire
- Conners 4
- Behaviour Assessment System for Children, Third Edition.

Case Formulation & Individualised Intervention Planning
Following the assessment process, our clinicians develop a structured case formulation to understand the factors contributing to a child’s learning, behavioural, or emotional challenges. Using a framework commonly applied in cognitive behavioural approaches, we consider multiple factors that may influence the child’s development and behaviour. These may include predisposing factors that shape a child’s developmental profile, precipitating factors that may have triggered current challenges, perpetuating factors that maintain certain behaviours or difficulties, and protective factors that support the child’s strengths and resilience. This comprehensive understanding allows our team to design individualized intervention plans that target the most meaningful areas of development, ensuring therapy strategies are tailored to the child’s unique needs and environment.

⚠️ Please note: The assessments we use are intended for educational and therapeutic planning purposes only. They are not diagnostic and do not replace formal evaluations conducted by psychologists or medical professionals.
